Welcome to Justin Laidlaw Photography

Based in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, I aim to create photographs that are close to life-like scenes, but still invoke the wonder of our imagination when viewing them.

About me

Hi there, my name is Justin Laidlaw, and I am a 29-soon to be 30 year-old (Dread…) hobbyist photographer from Edinburgh so thanks for looking at my website. I got my first DSLR when I was 20 years old, but it has only been in the last few that I have become seriously obsessed with photography. I now find myself often daydreaming about photography, whether that is about me being out in nature trying to capture a once-in-a-lifetime sunset or taking a portrait of someone and showing them how beautiful they are.

As a young child the outdoors always held a fascination for me - I was naturally drawn to BBC’s wildlife documentaries and Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy - between both I started to fall in love with all the different landscapes the world has to offer, and this is what initially inspired me to start taking photographs. I spent a couple of years trying to capture landscape images that emulated the photographers I was inspired by, but the photographs were nothing more than just snapshots on an iPhone and I slowly began to realise that, for me, they weren’t quite what I wanted to capture.

I started a photography page back in July 2016, which was right at the start of my photography obsession, looking back at those images I posted back then hurt my eyes now, but you can see the progression from beginner to my current level now.

In competition I have received commendations and a category win from the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the year.

Commended in 2021 & Commended + Category Winner in 2024.

Still a work in progress…

Justin.

Two awards for Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year, one for category winner and one recommended.
